I’m actually doing this thing! I’m so excited to participate as a guest participant in the Spring 2018 One Room Challenge hosted by Calling it Home.
If you’re not familiar with the ORC, it happens twice a year—each spring and fall. Twenty or so incredibly talented bloggers/designers are chosen as featured designers, but anyone is welcome to participate and share weekly updates every Thursday as we all update a space in our home to makeover in 6 short weeks!
We’re taking on our only full bathroom for this challenge, and this will be our first project beyond general “sprucing up” with new paint, new furniture, etc.
In all honesty, we just finished tiling the tub surround (three cheers to real showers again, yay!) so we’re already ahead of the game. BUT I also think it’s worth mentioning that we’ll still need every bit of these very short weeks because we’re painfully slow at this!
Onward to the good stuff!
To give you a brief background on our home, this is our first house and it’s already in pretty decent shape. The bathroom is the only room that really needed updating, as the tile was in pretty bad shape with some leaking and it’s impressively beige, ha.
Case in point—here are some before shots for your viewing pleasure! (some are photos from its original listing)
Challenges:
It’s not huge, and it’s our only full bathroom. The size is actually just fine for our little family (me, Jesse, and the furbabies), but we have to make a conscious effort to maximize any storage opportunities to help it work hard for us and future families who live there. This means a large medicine cabinet is mandatory, and we’ll be adding shelving above the toilet to take some of the pressure off of our overwhelmed tiny linen closet in the hallway. Here are the dimensions:
Resale! It needs to be neutral enough for resale but not boring because I want to love the space. We’re really trying to keep resale in mind with every single edit we make to the house, as it’s already valued at the high end in our area and we want to get as much money back on everything as we can.
The budget! We love our house and love making it beautiful, but we love the thought of being debt-free too. We’re trying to keep this as inexpensive as possible, so this will be a fun exercise in not getting everything I want. Fortunately, I will be FAR happier knowing we accomplished this without breaking the bank!
The vanity top. We’re keeping the existing cabinetry for the budget’s sake, but that only allows for an offset sink. I have yet to find even just a simple, white, offset 48” vanity top. Ours is beige-y and swirly and honestly not a dealbreaker if it needs to stay, but I would love a new one if I can manage to hunt one down that isn’t crazy expensive.
The Goal:
Light and bright with dark cabinetry, mixed metals, and lots of storage! I’m dreaming pretty big here, but I would LOVE to have a shower plant to liven the space up a bit. I would love it even more if I can manage to keep it alive at least a month, ha! Who has two black thumbs but wants a plant in a windowless bathroom anyway? This girl!
Here’s my moodboard! I’m awful at making decisions, so believe me that even just narrowing everything down to this was the freaking worst. It makes me so happy seeing it all together after so many months of dreaming, so I am pumped for this to actually happen!
In a valiant effort to stay somewhat on-track, I’ve made a list of everything that needs to be done. I’ll save you the mini meltdown we had over tiling the tub surround, so we’ll just cross that sucker off and leave it at that. 😉
• Tile shower surround
• Trim out between tile and ceiling
• Trim situation around door, base boards
• Source & install vinyl plank flooring
• Paint ceiling & walls
• Source & install new lighting
• Install new medicine cabinet
• Install TP holder, towel hooks, towel ring, new outlet/switch covers
• Install floating shelves above toilet
• Paint existing vanity, add new hardware
• Hunt down a new vanity top
• Install new faucet
• Add art, decorate!
I think that’s it for now! I’ll be back next week with hopefully lots of updates and decisions made! Check out the featured designers and guest bloggers participating in this One Room Challenge–everyone’s plans are looking so good!

That light fixture and rug are dreamy-can’t wait to see how your final bath remodel turns out! I’m tackling a mini makeover on my own bathroom for ORC this year, so can’t wait to see the other bathroom transformations. Good luck!
